Well. It's probably a little bit true that the general populace doesn't know much about geography, but it's not really the teacher's fault. Yeah, we had to memorize the states in school, but I also had to memorize all the countries on every continent. Except maybe Asia, which I don't remember doing, but I suspect we probably did.

'Sides, when I was in Argentina last year, they were just as bad. And my Danish friend's friends thought he was going to Africa when he told them he was going to Argentina.

Has it ever occurred to anyone that continuing to alienate the countless millions of US citizens who are knowledgeable about the rest of the world and who reject the current administration and its foreign policy is completely counterproductive? It used to be funny, but the tone of the conversation has shown me that this is getting to be nothing short of outright bigotry and hatred.

I find it especially hypocritical that the same Europeans, Canadians, and others who rightfully criticize US foreign policy are silent when it comes to their nations' complicity in US misadventures and their oppressive actions around the world. There are so many dumb-asses here because unless your family has the means to send their kids to private school, there is zero chance for a child to break out of ignorance.

wow...I don't think that I've seen another strip get this many comments. I'm American, and usually proud of it. Once in a while our administration does something that makes me cringe...OK....that happens a lot these days, but generally I'm quite happy to be what I am. The problem here is really a whole bunch of little problems. Whhile I commend the strip for its sheer artistic brilliance (seriously, put this one on a shirt and I'd probably buy it, it's hilarious!), I caution against repeating this theme too often. This one is funny, but the underlying tone has a darker side to it.

The fact that a lot of Americans, really has no clue, or desire for one, about what the rest of the "world" is all about, other than in extremely compressed headline form, actually is a good thing, on a global scale. If everybody in the US knew what was actually going on in the world, with the UN, with Kyoto talks and the like, the US would pull back into isolationism like never seen before. The US view on the US is _that_ polished and self justified as a whole, that the common voice would be that of, who are they to tell US what the hell to do, screw them.

The state of affairs, as it is today, with the level of ignorance going on, actually ensures that the more educated (enlightened?) part of the US population has a better shot at claiming office and power than the die heard nationalists.

Why are you Americans so offended? Every country has its disadvantages, your country isn't perfect either. Take a joke, people.

That's why we have friends..... we flip each other a bunch of shit, but we also look after each other's well-being when it really matters. Hmm... I just got home from the US. I seems to me that most of these comments and the strips are just prejudice. In my experience Americans in general are much more self critical than for instance people in European countries. Europeans usually think that they know a lot more about the world than people in the US, even though we often ridicule ourselves with our ignorance. Americans are more careful at that point.

Sadly, that's pretty true. We had to learn geography of the States, but not much else (I don't even think geography of anything gets taught much anymore, though, cuz half the people I talk to nowadays don't even know where the different states are). The only reason I learned about the rest of the world was because I wanted to know.
