You can start looking now to get an idea of what you like and what you don't like. Don't make a descision until the year before your wedding. Its always best to get it a year in advance. I got mine in march of this year and my dress won't be ready until 8 weeks before the wedding which is in june 2010 and that doesn't include alterations. But as soon as you find the dress of your dreams stop looking. Good luck and congrats. Here are some websites to checkout if you'd like.

Funny... Sad but true

Kat from United States
January 3, 2008

Dude...sometimes irony is there to provoke maybe a chuckle or a giggle, but this one mostly provokes a sigh from me, mostly because I'm not into diamonds themselves, but I am also NOT into the idea of slave labor. Understatement? Yeah, but that comic up there is an understatement. Not only does the purchase of diamonds promote this kind of slave labor (as people here have mentioned), but it also promotes the strip mining that ravages the only home we have: this planet.

Consumerism (and those who "preach" its so-called gospel) not only hurts the people but our Mother Earth as well.

Okay, I'm off my soapbox now. :-P

Andreas from Sweden
January 3, 2008

Almost every american that has commented on this strip is appauled - BY WHAT?!

It is a fact that hiphopers generally likes the blingbling that most oftenly consists in thousands of diamonds. It is also a fact that most hiphopers that can afford such luxury are americans ones.
The joke is built on this, don't ruin it because you feel offended as an american..

Klauss from Germany
December 31, 2007

I visit US twice - yes, black man american love the bling

Najiy from United States
December 29, 2007

I have to disagree with some of the comments. As an African American, I don't feel that the connection between the hip-hop bling and the African Miner is far-fetched. The real point here is not "Black folks love diamonds and bling-bling", it is the tremendous disparity between the two groups. African Americans spend money on the consumption of goods, while people who look just like them are forced into slave-wage jobs to support that very same industry. Indirectly, those consumers are contributing to the enslavement and subjugation of their own people. White Americans consume diamonds as well, but the point of the strip would be lost on most people without the addition of the racial element. It's not racist, it's poignant.

Leimar from Sweden
December 28, 2007

too true, sadly enough :'(

AmZ from United States
December 22, 2007

Harsh. Excellent.

Melanie from United States
December 18, 2007

It isn't funny because it IS true.
One accessory: Grills.
One Designer: Jacob Arabo.
The list is actually a lot bigger but people should research for themselves.
While we may not appreciate the truth being shown to us, (seems to be a common USA trait) it doesn't make it any less true.
I refuse to buy diamonds because DeBeers has cornered the market and keeps the prices artificially high, as well as I don't contribute to slavery of any sort.
Just because it doesn't make you feel all warm and fuzzy, doesn't make it less of a reality.

Jan from Sweden
December 17, 2007

Bling bling = Hip hop = Black american. Am I the only one who makes this obvious connection?

I don't see it as a social commentary on Africans or people with african descent per se, but rather on the concept of BLING, as stated in the comic. The comic might just as well be Paris Hilton covered in diamonds instead of a blinged out hiphopper, but where's the joke or irony in that?

On a side note, there are so many contradictions, interesting social tendencies and controversy in the hip hop culture that it's just mind boggling...

Ass with hat and beard from Denmark
December 15, 2007

I really think that a constructive debate is going on here, in addition to this I have written a small poem to you all:

"Here I lay thinking of you
Making my heart beat
My palms sweat

You are more than I ever hoped for
Your voice
Your humor
Your sexy body

The scent of a cherry
The voice of a goddess
The mind of a genius
and skin of a child

You make me laugh
You make me smile
For you
I will go the extra mile
"

Kemal from Denmark
December 14, 2007

@ mike
Are you seriously stating that NO African Americans wear diamonds? Get real man. That being said, I do not in any way believe that this is a realistic picture of African American people. They are doctors, lawyers, teachers etc. as well as any other group of the American population. However, the comic simply uses the well-known image of a rapper (I suppose) who are usually African American and who often wear jewelry. Dont try to convince me that these people dont exist. Yes, its stereotyping, but comedy often is. Its difficult to make jokes about things which people cant recognize.

Anders V from Sweden
December 13, 2007

This is great humor because it's serious. When you ask yourself if it's ok to laugh about it, then it's often a good joke.

Or as a danish poet said it (Roughly translated): If you only takes a joke as a joke and serious issues are only seen from a serious point of view, then you have missed the point of them both.

And face it US citisen who complain: You are using way more resources a person than anyone else in the world. We in europe are in a good second place , but we don't have to show off our bad taste as you do.

adrian from United Kingdom
December 13, 2007

@ Mike:

First yes stereotyping is bad and all but most of what we see of the US over here is sold to us by the US complete with these stereotypes intact, its hard not to use them ourselves. I don't think anyone here is stupid enough to believe that is the sum total of African American culture.

Which brings me to my second point, isn't this made better by the simple juxtaposition of AFRICAN to AFRICAN American? And yes the US has by far the largest diamond market in the world.

Thirdly N.Y the Fashion capitol of the world? Ever hear of Milan or Paris or is your view of the WORLD as narrow as everyone else you've criticised?

MH from Denmark
December 12, 2007

OK, guys, you need to make some jokes about us selfobtained, ignorant, wiseass Scandinavians, as you can tell the ones hitting on the 2-3% of US citizents simply provokes the shit out of the remaining 97%. And Ive just been to the US (again) and no matter what I have never seen so much bad taste bling bling as I saw on the African-americans. But because I think its bad taste, they dont have to...and most of my afam friends doesnt agree with my style of clothing, and who gives a shit?. So could we please just laugh at the stribes in here, and if not, go to the next one, it might take it out oon a group of people you dont agree with.

Pedro from Brazil
December 8, 2007

My take: this IS true, and the cartoon itself IS funny, but _not_ "because it's true".

As an editorial cartoon, the comparison between the two black guys in opposite situations should be seen less literally, merely as a socialist critique to the exploration that our culture necessarily creates, and the two black guys were used just for the intended comic effect...

Qualon from Denmark
December 8, 2007

Well... In fact, America is that big lumb of land that goes from Canada to Argentina - NOT just USA.

I am aware that the "target" is most likely US rappers, but in theory he just as well be mexican (but omg Qualon you tard, then where is his sombrero? :)

gustavo from Brazil
December 8, 2007

This comic didn't make me laught but it sure put a smile in my face. Of course I know that lots of afro-americans does not use all that bling bling stuff but we all know those stupid gangsta-rappers use them a lot.

riv from Canada
December 8, 2007

You know... I think the comic is good just 'cause it zeroes in on "gangsta rappers" (it may be just my perception). Not all African Americans own bling-bling (poverty IS an issue both in US and here), but I think it's good to laugh at the retarded "gangstas" on MTV who DO own luxurious cars, amazing apartments, and drink "Crystal" champagne whenever they fancy.

caroline from United States
December 7, 2007

Wow! These are some really great comments! I like Mike's point about stereotyping (of rappers and Americans). I think they were going for a bit of irony that hit too close to the bone.

But, for the record, there are cruelty-free diamonds in the market which are manufactured in Canada from carbon. Their price is also less inflated.

Another not-so-pretty aspect of the jewelry industry is the source of the metals that are used. There are jewelers, though, that use recycled metals and rocks.

Jason from United States
December 7, 2007

Wrong. The miners don't give the diamonds directly to the business man, but to the guy shoving an assault rifle in their face, followed by a severe beating for not working hard enough. Diamonds suck, I'll never buy one.

izirajder from Poland

December 7, 2007

Cmon Kemal, what are you 15 yrs old. So let me get this straight. Its a "fact" that wealthy African Americans wear Diamonds because you (in Denmark btw) see it on MTV. that may be the most comedic part about this comic strip.

I am African American and neither have I or any of the people I associate with rocked Diamonds. Cmon. Get a clue.

Cmon Wolff, is this your idea of artistic integrity and responsibility?

Kemal from Denmark
December 7, 2007

A lot of people here (especially americans) need to take a chill-pill. Besides, the cartoon does not state anything which is false. It is a fact that some african people work very hard under harsh conditions to extract diamonds which are exported to the western world, inclusive the US. It is also an undeniable fact that many wealthy African-americans greatly enjoy wearing a lot of bling-bling, i.e. diamonds. Anyone who has ever watched MTV can testify to that. Now, while a lot of other people use diamonds as well, it would arguably not make as funny comic as this. We must remember that WM are simply trying to make comedy and are not in any way obliged to show a representative image of out world.

Waexsey from Sweden

You in the US love to call yourself American: "I'm proud to be an American", so i guess the rapper is from the US,and because he is light skin is maybe one if his parents were white?!
------------
To someone else(?!):
And here in Europe we dont censor as much as you do in the US.

-------------
All the damn rapper music videos they always have 100 of girls, why? Is it because their music suck so bad?! And was it with these "gangsta-rappers"?! They think violence is cool, and the kids that see and listen to this think it is cool, in sweden we get more and more trouble with this.

In my opinion, rap music is not music and the movies they do suck and just bring violence!

Hey first let me say that I respect you guys a lot for constantly trying to push your artistic expressions and putting out a witty daily comic which is a momentous task in of itself.

But...
I think this comic in particular is way off base and as it is riding the line of editor cartoon, deserves some discussion.

I think its way too simplistic of an "statement" to point fingers at "rappers" in an attempt to vilify them regarding the Blood Diamond Issue.

The Majority of African Americans DO NOT have Bling Necklaces and Diamond rings. It is a popular culture issue and I think very misunderstood by people outside of this particular demographic.

People from other countries and cultures should be careful in their proclamations of "stupid Rappers", especially since the base of their understanding comes from corporate controlled media outlets.

Plus, most of these rappers you see are RENTING those Diamonds they're wearing in the videos. Strange I admit, but I'd be careful no

Thank you for your response. I am not familiar with Danish law and I would certainly not want WM to jeopardize themselves or the distribution of their very entertaining work. It is that they feel the freedom to lampoon everyone that has made me (and subsequently many friends and acquaintances) loyal fans, and was also the reason for my surprise and censorship. But all must comply with the law.

Thank you for your question.
When a comment is obviously racist it is against the law. Even if we have got free speech. That's why the comment was deleted.
We at WM try not to censor the comments only deleting double posts etc. I.e. you would never see a comment criticising WM content being deleted.

I didn't realize that WM censored their fan's comments. Interesting move from a comic that many would say is often offensive (potentially including today's). I suspect I would not have agreed with the comment you deleted, but it leaves me wondering what could have been so offensive that WM would ban it. I wonder how WM would feel if their work was censored. The Danes seem to cry about free speech only when it serves them best (sadly it is no different here), perhaps it is an all to human trait.

(And the African hid some diamonds up his arsehole, migrated to Denmark and lived happily ever after.)

@ Bas Dirks from Netherlands
That's not so easy. Those people who work in diamond mines (and many, many other terrible places like that) are not slaves. But they do work like slaves 'cause there is no other work for them. So if you stop buying all the stuff they make, what would they do? Therefore boycott seems a really silly idea to me. I think the only solution is to give all the African natural resources back to the Africans, so they still can dig diamonds but also sell them, get the money and invest it in development of their countries. But it's just a dream, of course.

You know what's funny, walking to work through the jewish part of Antwerp, you know bling bling. I was thinking about the film: blood diamont where they litterly state that antwerp is dealing in blood diamonds. I thought how sad it was and how you could live with yourself knowing that the money that you earn is partly invested in war and slavery in Africa.

I got to work and I see this, wonderful!

Wow, this is Great, a truely great complaint. It's true, those blingsters in the musick-industry, always rappin' about their poor 'brothahs' back in the 'mothahland', while Blooddiamonds are used to show how 'cool' they are. Fantastic, dudes, keep up the great work!

Anders Morgenthaler & Mikael Wulff

Well,

we're two humans who call ourselves Mikael Wulff and Anders Morgenthaler - and yes we both own a computer - wow!?

We

don't have real jobs - like a lawyer, account, or fisher - and we know very little about stock trading. But people tell us that we're excellent at boiling eggs.

We

love movies about lawyers evicting turtles from their homes - we hope for a big TV series. We enjoy music made by lawyers. We don't like technology - especially the Ipod, Itunes and Iphone from Mac since we prefer less selfish products like the Youpod.

We

also think that playstations and video games, mobile phones and DVDs, computers and autos and plane travel are overrated and useless compared to prune juice - it's more healthy and it helps you digest.

We

rarely go outside and are a little uneasy with the whole concept of hotels and travel. Why would you want to travel when you can just go Spain and relax?

Besides

that we kind of enjoy life; we have a huge mortgage to pay and have no insurance - we're just being optimistic. We love our TV and follow our mortgage rate constantly on the teletext. We think it would be a good idea for MTV to create a new channel just called MTV Mortgage which would only be about tips and tricks from real estate agents.
