I think the reason why people don't get this strip is the fact that the couple on the right and the baby on the left (the couple to the right's baby) are in fact black people (excuse my unpolitically correct description), only Morgenthaler failed to make their skin dark enough for us to notice. Even when this has been cleared up, the joke isn't very fun, at least not in my opinion.

I'll have to say that this one's got me stumped... Yes, they changed babies. But why? And why are the mothers so happy about it? They'd rather have the other woman's baby anyways? And how come the men look like they didn't realize the mistake when it's so obvious to everyone else?

Too many questions, I can't make sense of it...

The light on the ceiling is in the middle, true. Also, The man on left is a little behind the light, while the man on right is a little in front of the light (from our perspective). You can notice this from the shadow on the bed to the right and the feet of the men - the feet placement difference is subtle because of forshortening, check out the lenght of the beds for scale of forshortening. See with your eyes, not with your preconceptions of how things "ought" to look
